Healthy Food

There have been times when I have been so frustrated in the grocery store, I was pretty sure I was going to cry. I have been doing everything I can to help my daughter eat healthy food, and that means reading labels. I get her natural peanut butter that has no added sugar, and I also buy jelly that is made with Splenda. Though Splenda is not entirely natural, I think it is something in small doses that is better than sugar, at least for those in my family. However, finding other healthy choices is becoming something of a nightmare for me.

There are many packages you will see on the shelves at the store that say they are a healthy food item. Don’t take their word for it. Look at the label. If you do not recognize any term you see, you should not be eating or drinking it. There are some many preservatives out there, and other additives, that are put in foods, and we don’t even know what they are. We just eat them. They could be doing untold harm to our bodies, yet for some reason, we block that out of our minds when looking for healthy food.

If I could shop at a store devoted to healthy food, I would. However, I don’t have that option where I live. That means I have to make the most of what I can get. I do a lot of my shopping around the outside of the grocery store. This means a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, and diary. I like to cook my own healthy food so I am more aware of what goes into each dish, even though it does take more time out of my day. Most of the stuff in the middle of the store is easy to make, but if you read the labels, you might see why it should be avoided.

One important thing to think about with healthy food is the type of bread that you choose. You might think bread is very simple, but if you read the labels, you will find that this is just not so. Even breads made in a grocery store bakery can be filled with things you don’t think belong in a loaf of bread. You may have to search for some with no preservatives (though some use vinegar for this purpose, and that is fine to have). You may have to replace your bread more often, but if you want only healthy food for your family, you might feel it is a small price to pay.

Summary

Health food is somewhat deceiving at your local grocery store. Even though the package may say healthy, always check the ingredients to see exactly what items are in it. Most have preservatives of some sort, and the less you and your family consume, the better.
