Multiple Personalities

There is a lot of skepticism in regards to multiple personalities and disorders. Some clinicians will say that it is not possible for people to have multiple personalities. Others will say that they have witnessed individuals who possess up to one hundred personalities. Up until the year of 1994, the disorder was called Multiple Personality Disorder. After much more research was conducted, the name changed to Dissociative Identity Disorder because there was a great amount of new understanding about the condition. Basically, it involves a disturbance in one’s identity which seems to be controlled by two or more separate identities control the person’s behavior. These identities are often referred to as being ‘alters’. Those multiple personalities can cause quite a bit of trouble for not only the individual but for society as well.

Some clinicians will say that most often, the multiple personalities are not even aware of the other personalities that exist along side of them. Each one may have different tastes, different voices, and even different allergies. This disorder is very difficult to comprehend and can be rather hard to treat as well. Diagnosing the disorder can sometimes be very simple. Other times, it can be extremely difficult.

There are a few very common factors that can be pointed out when figuring out where and when the multiple personalities were born. Most patients who are diagnosed with having multiple personalities are female. The majority of these females have experienced some sort of abuse in their childhood – either physical or sexual. Sometimes, both abuses were taking place. When a child is being abused, a new personality is formed and takes over the situation. It is a form of self-defense and the child who was originally being violated may be able to escape and allow the other personality to feel the pain for them. Before too long, other multiple personalities may begin to form as well and take on different roles for the individual. The individual may not have any clue that this is even occurring. They might complain about temporary memory loss and not remember why or how something happened to them. They might not remember how they got to a particular place or even know the people that they have met.

How do these multiple personalities fade into one? Treatment for this disorder can be a long and challenging road. Most popular is hypnosis. The clinician will try to get each of the multiple personalities to make themselves known and eventually has to try to blend them all into one person. It can take years of therapy for this to be achieved. If you think a loved one or a friend may be suffering through this disorder and is showing signs of multiple personalities, reach out to them. Reach out to a medical professional and see if they can get some assistance. Having multiple personalities is not something that should be taken lightly or made into a joke. It means that someone is suffering and trying to survive with this disorder on a daily basis. Getting treatment immediately is the best thing for them.

Summary

Females tend to have multiple personality disorder more often than men do. Renamed as Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is believed the person becomes afflicted after some sort of abuse, usually as children. The most common complaint from women with the affliction is memory loss, or missing chunks of time. Treatment is a long process which could take many years to resolve.
